Magic Eden coders gathered in an Airbnb in San Jose, California, to hack in preparation for the so-called bitcoin halving. Their goal was to spend a week hacking to prepare for the so-called bitcoin halving — an event that is baked into the chain's code and helps to stave off inflation through programmatic monetary policy. watch nowTechnically speaking, runes just enables asset issuance of fungible tokens on bitcoin's base chain. The reason this is significant to developers is because of its efficiency relative to existing BRC-20 tokens, bitcoin's widely-used fungible token standard that has already received a ton of traction. Bitcoin rose above $64,000 on Friday, rebounding from a drop below the $60,000 mark, as the cryptocurrency continues to experience volatility ahead of the upcoming halving event. The volatile trade comes ahead of the upcoming halving, which is slated to take place this week. This is when the rewards for bitcoin miners are slashed in half. Amina analysts said miners are selling their bitcoin ahead of the halving. Net flows through the spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds have been negative since last week, according to Amina analysts — which is putting further pressure on bitcoin.

Work is part of our identity here in a way that people from other countries find at turns fascinating and pathological. The bill would aim to ensure that people aren’t pinged with work emails, texts or calls outside their established work hours, with notable exceptions for emergencies or scheduling issues. If the boss intrudes on your non-work window three times, you can report them and the state could impose fines starting at $100. No one likes pausing Succession to respond to a 9pm request, but the guilt of ignoring it and wondering whether your boss will be mad at you is also, like, not fun. Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of failed crypto exchange FTX, will head on Thursday to a federal court in downtown Manhattan, where U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan will deliver his sentencing. After a month of personally dabbling in the market, Bankman-Fried launched Alameda Research, named after the California county that housed his first office. The so-called crypto winter of 2022 wiped out hedge funds and lenders across the crypto universe. May of 2022 brought the crash of stablecoin Luna, creating a domino effect that sent crypto prices plunging, devastating other lenders. Like tech stocks, bitcoin sometimes benefits from low interest rates and improved market liquidity, which can lead to better sentiment and greater investment in growth assets. Stock Chart Icon Stock chart icon Bitcoin turns higher after two days of losses"There has been an inverse relationship between rates and bitcoin price," said Oppenheimer executive director Owen Lau. "When the Fed increased interest rates in 2022, it took out liquidity from the market, which impacted bitcoin and tech stocks. Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein said that the crypto fund manager expects to bring fees on its Grayscale Bitcoin Trust ETF down in the coming months, as the nascent crypto ETF market matures. The FTX bankruptcy estate reportedly offloaded the majority of its shares in Grayscale's bitcoin ETF, according to January reporting from Bloomberg and CoinDesk. Grayscale also wants to introduce other ways of giving investors less costly ways of accessing its bitcoin ETF, including a "mini" version of its flagship product — the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust, announced last week. The new BTC ETF would be effectively spun out of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust ETF and seeded with an as-yet undisclosed portion of bitcoin underlying GBTC shares. The firm is currently awaiting approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF.

The Ethereum network successfully completed its "Dencun" upgrade on Wednesday, which is meant to help it become faster and cheaper to use. The price of ether has been trading lower since then, which was expected based on the cryptocurrency's behavior following previous tech upgrades. "High activity on the Ethereum network has caused high transaction fees and, consequently, more fees burnt," Julio Moreno, CryptoQuant's head of research, said in a note Wednesday. High transaction activity causes network fees to spike, more fees being burnt and total supply to decrease." They're hoping that the combination of increased activity and the decrease in the supply of ether over time will push the token's price higher.

On Tuesday bitcoin reached a new intraday record , for the first time since November 2021, of $69,210. It had been pushing higher for weeks – it's up 55% over the past month – and tumbled shortly after notching the new high. Bitcoin was last higher by 6% at $66,315.19, according to Coin Metrics, while ether rocketed more than 11% to $3,785.76, its highest level since January 2022. Cryptocurrencies bounced on Wednesday, recovering much of the losses from the previous day's sell-off, which came soon after bitcoin hit an all-time high. When traders use leverage to short bitcoin and the cryptocurrency's price rises, they buy bitcoin back from the market to close their positions, which pushes the price up and causes more positions to be liquidated.

Sam Bankman-Fried might be in jail, but the NYT reports that he's still got a finger on the pulse with crypto. Bankman-Fried has been reportedly sharing crypto investment tips with prison guards, per NYT. Bankman-Fried is reportedly giving crypto investment tips and touting investments in the cryptocurrency Solana to prison guards, The Times reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter. Bankman-Fried, Mukasey said, should be given a shorter sentence of five to six-and-a-half years. Government exhibit in the case against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. Lawyers representing the bankruptcy estate of FTX told a judge in Delaware last week that they expect to fully repay customers and creditors with legitimate claims. After the dust settled from FTX's bankruptcy, Solana saw a huge run-up in its price, and it continued to rally after the September report. The bankruptcy estate of FTX has been looking to sell its Anthropic stake, according to a court filing this month. For FTX customers, being made whole, according to a judge's ruling, means getting the cash equivalent of what their crypto was worth in November 2022.

Investors expect the Securities and Exchange Commission to greenlight spot ether ETFs in May, but the price action for the crypto could be subdued compared to bitcoin's moves in the runup to its ETF approvals. That compares to the 55% surge bitcoin saw after BlackRock first filed its spot ETF application for the flagship crypto. Regardless, we see the spot ether ETF being less appreciated by the market." JPMorgan estimates a "no more than 50% chance" of spot ether ETF approval by May 23, the final deadline for the SEC to approve or deny the Ark/21Shares application . Schwenkler said any excitement leading up to potential ether ETF approvals will be "less speculative" and that a lot of it is priced in already.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Women lead the major categories at the Grammys this year – names like SZA, Taylor Swift, Victoria Monét, Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo and Brandy Clark top the list. If Taylor Swift wins for “Midnights,” she will become the first artist in Grammy history to win the top prize four times. (And, conversely, artists it loves to nominate but not award: both Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus have yet to receive a Grammy. I'd love to see a Cyrus win, but I’ve been burned before! Bitcoin extended its recent declines on Tuesday, falling further below $40,000 to its lowest level since the beginning of December. Some have pointed to short-term selling pressure from exits from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), which has seen about $2 billion in outflows since Jan. 19 while BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust and Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund have each seen more than $1 billion in inflow. Expectations around the event emerged last summer intensified in August, pushing the bitcoin price steadily higher. The move in bitcoin continued to pull the rest of the crypto market lower. Here's the state of play globally for crypto regulation and enforcement in 2023 — and a look at what to expect in 2024. "However, much of their work has involved providing guidance to the industry through enforcement actions," continued Levin. Crypto market participants nevertheless hope that the spate of legal challenges brought to crypto companies in 2023 will bring clarity in the form of new regulations. The U.S.'s dominant role in global finance and its focus on consumer protection plays a crucial role in its leading position in crypto regulation enforcement. The region has been increasingly warming to crypto assets, despite a broader anti-crypto push from China, which banned bitcoin trading and mining in 2021.
